when my youngest was much younger, we both thought it was a fun thing to tease him when he was well behaved! I would call him in a very serious tone and "interrogate" him - with a straight face with me basically calling him an alien and demanding to know what he did to my real son. We would both end up laughing! Corny I know but we had fun. Kind of miss those times ...
I find it amusing funny, not funny funny :) because it can happen. When a mischevious boy all of a sudden become a goody-two-shoes, two things: either he is guilty over something or he is plain sick. :) :) haha not so simple also ar I know ...
you speak as an experienced mother. When children behave 'out of character' I always warn the mothers to be cautious. It is as you said, either they had done something wrong, they are stressed because of some unresolved conflicts, or they are sick.
In answer to your earlier question, yes, the mother did the right thing in calling me. We managed to solve his problem before it became worse.
