Another offering by Jack Higgins in his Sean Dillon series.
Jack Higgins is a worthy successor to Alistair McLean in producing fast paced action orientated thriller. While Alistair McLean deals with ego-maniac masterminds, Jack Higgins has in recent years focus on world terrorism, the rise of the Russian mafia and Islamic fundamentalism. While the worlds are different, the protagonist are the same. The hero is a merciless efficient killer who has a moral code that justice be dispensed summarily.
Jack Higgins has created a fictional black ops unit under the British Prime Minster which deals with matters other conventional law agencies cannot. Sean Dillon, former enforcer of the Provisional IRA was co-opted to be a key member of this unit.
This novels, like other Sean Dillon novels are fast moving with rapid change of cities and a bloody trail of bodies. It is interesting that this cold blooded killer wins the love of a couple of women who said, "Basically, you are a good man, Sean." Thus makes me wonder if it is possible to act like a beast without become one. As Friedrich Nietzsche once said, "Whoever battles with monsters had better see that it does not turn him into a monster. And if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you."
